Topic: Materialism - The Love Of Money

Luke 21:1-4 "And he looked up and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites. And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.

A social experiment was carried out where people were tricked into helping a poor man. The wealthy and the middle class were found to be aloof when it came to helping, but most poor people went out of their way to help. I don't know if you have ever noticed that the more some people acquire material gain, is the more they seem to be glued to what they have. Material gain has a way it dominates a man's mind to assume that it is the goal of life whilst life belongs to God.

The verse shows us a similar pattern. Jesus, having observed how the rich gave at the offering, concluded that the poor widow had given more. Giving or blessing others is not an issue of having more, it's a concept of the heart.

If a man's heart is not established in God, the love of this world will take over their desires.

Elsewhere in the book of Proverbs, the scripture speaks about not setting your heart on that which perishes. The material world perishes, some of the houses you are building will be abandoned estates in the next 20 years, strangers will inhibit them if you do not commit yourself unto God. Always find a cause bigger than you and be part of it.
