Many Christians do not understand the purpose of Altars in a Christian life. The word Altar comes from a Hebrew word, "Mizbeach" which means place of sacrifice, or high place. All through scripture, men who knew God created altars upon which they put their sacrifice to worship God.
The verse shows us that God commanded Jacob to set up an altar in Bethel where he first heard him when he fled from his brother Esau. This means God is in the business of making men set up altars. That's why he sent us Christ Jesus who became not only the sacrifice but the ultimate altar; but now seeks to set altars of praise in our hearts and homes.
Ministry can only flourish to the level in which it becomes an altar. Until your heart is given to God as an altar, the life of God will be a place of struggle. God is calling us back to a place of consecration.
